Allen City Council has recognized Friends of the Allen Public Library with a special proclamation at a recent council meeting. The tireless efforts of the Friends of the Library have resulted in enhanced children’s and adult programs such as “Bach to Books,” “Listening to the Prairie: Farming in Nature’s Image,” and “Dinosaurs of Texas.” Tracey Hanft, vice-president, will receive the Council’s proclamation.

Athletes of the Year
Allen students Natasha Richardson and Oliver Pierce were recognized by the Allen City Council a recent meeting, for being named the local Athletes of the Year by the Texas Amateur Athletics Federation. T.A.A.F. presents a female and male Athlete of the Year Award based on local nominations. Award winners were selected based upon overall athletic participation and achievement, sportsmanship, and attitude and effort along with other special criteria.
Natasha Richardson participated in the Allen Sports Association track for the first time this year and went on to qualify in the 400 meters for the AAU Jr. Olympics Nationals. She finished in the top 15 at a national meet with over 50 participating runners. Richardson was the only ASA track qualifier for the Texas State Games sponsored by T.A.A.F. During the course of the season, she stayed committed to training and practice and was able to improve her time in the 200 meters by two seconds over the season.
Oliver Pierce has participated in the ASA wrestling program for four years. He recently became the first Texan to win a Triple Crown in amateur wrestling by way of winning three national titles. These championship titles include USA Wrestling Kids Freestyle Tournament, Greco-Roman National Tournament, and USA Folkstyle Nationals. His dedication to the sport includes training with older students at Allen High School and participation in out-of-state venues.

Frisco

Business Crime Prevention
The Frisco Police Department is launching a Business Crime Prevention Initiative. Businesses make up a significant portion of Frisco and as part of their community service mission; the department has formulated the program to partner with the Chamber of Commerce and local business to help reduce crime.
The plan is to design to reach out to Frisco businesses and address concerns relating to crime and ways to reduce the risks of victimization. The first meeting was held on October 1st to learn about ongoing trends the criminal elements are using, the first being Identity Theft. This is one of the fastest rising crimes today. Information was given about ways to combat identity theft from the viewpoint of business.
Future topics will include ways to reduce theft, control of conflict, alcohol related crimes and other commercial/retail concerns. Future plans will include an e-mail network to increase up to the minute alerts on potential crimes and notifying participants of changes in crime trends.
Contact Officer Mike Crawford of the Frisco Police Department’s Community Services Division at 972-335-5603 x106 for more information.
